The City of Jackson was incorporated on
December 26, 1826. It was named in honor of President Andrew Jackson. The 64th county formed in Georgia, Butts County was created out of pieces of Henry and Monroe counties in December
of 1825.

It was named for Captain Samuel Butts, a militiaman who was killed fighting hostile Creek
and Cherokee Indians at the town of
Chalibee in January of 1814.

Students of history will enjoy exploring the numerous historical properties throughout the Jackson area. The 1897 Carmichael House is a Queen Anne/Victorian style mansion. It is still a private home but also hosts many art festivals and other community events. The Victorian-style 1898 Butts County Courthouse dominates the square in Jackson. Much of the courtroom features the original woodworking and glass.
